Lowest of lows, stealing a biker’s bike while he lays dying next to it

We have all heard of some pretty low things in life but I have to say that this really competes for being one of the worst things that can happen to a biker.

Scott Henry had just crashed his motorcycle and was laying next to it when reportedly a truck stopped at the accident. A man got out of the truck and picked up the motorcycle and rode off on the bike. Scott later died at a local hospital from his injuries. Police are currently investigating the accident and theft.

Just imagine laying on the road, knowing that you need help and someone stops, only to “save” your bike and not even check on you. While we do not know if the people that stopped could have helped this downed biker, it makes you wonder still how some people can be so heartless.

Harley-Davidson V-Rod is a wicked fast low rider

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Harley-Davidson first entered into the power cruiser category in 2002 with some serious drag bike influence reflected in the styling. Except for the V-Twin configuration of the motor, tradition flew out the window with the non-traditional VRSCA V-Rod. It didn’t look or sound like anything that one had come to expect from America’s best-known oldest motorcycle manufacturer.

Harley-Davidson’s V-Rod drew its power from a Porsche designed 1130 cc DOHC, eight-valve Revolution V-Twin, liquid-cooled motor with electronic sequential port fuel injection. Exhaust exited via a unique and stylish, two-into-one-into-two, single right-side system. The motor mated to a five-speed manual transmission, with a high ratio spur gear primary drive and a final belt drive.

Biker Dies Going 239 MPH

Talk about dying quickly, crashing at over 200 mph certainly is way to do that. In Utah a biker was clocked at over 200 miles per hour before this speed demon biker meet his end.

Cliff Gullett lost control of his motorcycle Wednesday while trying to set a new land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats annual time trials.  Cliff had in the past won several other land speed records but was looking forward to trying to get his Streamliner up to 400 mph.

Hopefully investigators will be able to figure out what caused his death and be able to help prevent such accidents in the future. If Cliff’s goals are to ever be achieved, these hard earned lessons are needed to make racing safer for every biker at the salt flats.

H-D Recalls 2008 motorcycles built between May 6, 2007 through December 11, 2007

If you own one of the motorcycles being recalled you may have been noticing some problems as reported by many owners of 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It seems that the fuel filter shell may crack and lead to problems.

FLHP, FLHPE, FLHR, FLHRC, FLHRSE4, FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU, FLHTCUSE3, FLHTP, FLHX, FLTR models built between May 6, 2007 through December 11, 2007 are being recalled under Harley-Davidson’s Safety Recall Campaign 0135. The recall will replace the fuel filter shell and replace the part number with an A at the end to denote the new part.

While checking the various Harley-Davidson forums, it does seem that many bikers already knew that their new bikes had problems and that H-D was making it offical by issuing the recall but now there is a even bigger problem.

It seems that there is a shortage of replacement parts and even new motorcycles being sold cannot be delivered until the fuel filter shell is replaced. So if you are the proud owner of a new Harley-Davidson, you might want to make sure that your bike was not produced during that time and look in the mail for your recall letter, if you have not got a letter yet, you are probally not within the recall or you just threw it out with all the junk mail most people get. Also call your local dealer to make sure that they have the parts in stock and can arrange a time for your bike. The repair should take less than an hour.

Harley’s 105th combines thrill of the ride with family reunion of sorts

By RICK BARRETT

Harley-Davidson Inc. is poised to do something this week that many businesses could only dream of — deliver a sequel to its 100th anniversary celebration that roared through Milwaukee only five years ago.

Not to be eclipsed by the centennial, the party that begins Wednesday night and continues through Aug. 31 will have its own identity, including a Bruce Springsteen concert and the recently opened Harley-Davidson museum that was only a concept on paper five years ago.

“I think some cynics in the marketplace might say they’re trying to make up for the Elton John fiasco” in 2003, when the British pop star was the surprise headliner and bombed at the 100th anniversary party, said Dennis Garrett, an associate professor of marketing at Marquette University.

A HOG Wall of Ink tattoo contest, martial arts fights and a “hot model” competition are reminders that the 105th anniversary bash stems from Harley’s macho culture that has generated billions of dollars in sales for the company.

It’s hard to say whether the four-day event will attract as many bikers as the 100th anniversary – attended by more than 200,000 people from around the world. Yet Milwaukee-area hotels are nearly sold out, and tourism officials are sending people to Illinois for a place to stay this week.

Early estimates by Harley and tourism experts are that at least 125,000 people will be here for the 105th anniversary party. Harley had 120,000 two-day tickets available for the events at the Summerfest grounds Friday and Saturday, and most of those tickets have been sold.

“We have seen a few room cancellations at the airport and downtown hotels. But we are anticipating a huge crowd,” said Doug Neilson, president and CEO of Visit Milwaukee, the city’s tourism agency.

“We have seen a few room cancellations at the airport and downtown hotels. But we are anticipating a huge crowd,” said Doug Neilson, president and CEO of Visit Milwaukee, the city’s tourism agency.

An oldie but a goodie

In some ways, the timing of Harley’s pep rally couldn’t be better as the world’s largest manufacturer of heavyweight motorcycles struggles with the sputtering economy and the graying of its customer base.

Harley has plenty of baby boom customers to last another 10 years, but an increasing number of them will soon be trading weekends on a motorcycle for weekends with the grandkids. Big parties such as the 105th celebration help send the message that Harley is still young at heart.

One of the boomers riding to Milwaukee this week is Terence McElwee, a 59-year-old attorney with the University of Georgia Research Foundation. He bought his first motorcycle after attending Harley’s 100th anniversary celebration, on foot, while he lived in Racine and worked at Marquette University.

“I just kept wishing that I had a bike during the 100th,” McElwee said.

This will be the Milwaukee native’s third long-distance motorcycle ride, covering about 1,500 miles round trip.

“My riding buddy is Ross McConnell, attorney and retired Air Force pilot. We both started riding Harleys in the last five years, part of the graying of the biker world that is often blamed for the recent and rapid rise in motorcycle fatalities. We’re both single and never expected to be dating, riding a Harley and living in the South as I approach 60,” McElwee said.

Thousands of new bikers will be coming to Milwaukee this week. For them, riding into the city where Harley-Davidson has its headquarters will be an emotional experience, said Genevieve Schmitt, founder of WomenRidersNow.com, an online magazine about women motorcyclists.

Schmitt’s first trip to Milwaukee was in 1998 for Harley’s 95th anniversary party. The Montana motorcyclist was skeptical of the hype surrounding that event but was impressed by the throngs of motorcyclists and the deep sense of Harley heritage in the city.

Schmitt is coming back for the 105th anniversary events.

“I was high on Harley for weeks after the 95th-year celebration. There’s something about having tens of thousands of people in one location, celebrating a common interest, that results in continued brand loyalty,” she said.

The company has hosted a big party in Milwaukee every five years since its 90th anniversary in 1993, and there were smaller events before that. It’s become a five-year tradition that could be continued in 2013 even if the events cost Harley millions of dollars each time.

“We really haven’t gone down that road yet,” but the pattern is there, said company spokesman Bob Klein.

A regular event

Some question whether Harley can throw an anniversary party every five years without the event getting predictable and stale.

“I understand why they’re doing this, but I think the formula needs to be mixed up a little after this year,” Schmitt said, adding that Harley’s new $75 million museum is important to the success of the 105th anniversary.

Once every five years is probably enough for an event this large. Otherwise Harley risks diluting its brand rather than reinforcing it, said Mark Goff, a Milwaukee public relations consultant who tracked media coverage of the 100th anniversary.

“You don’t want to wear people out” with anniversary parties, Goff said. “I don’t think anyone at Harley is pretending this is the 100th anniversary part II. This event might not be as international . . . like having the three Japanese guys rolling their bikes off a Boeing 747″ they rented to attend the 100th celebration.

Already, though, thousands of Harley riders are on the way here as part of organized rides that began in 105 cities.

Some are Wisconsin natives living in other places, coming home to visit family, friends or their old hangouts.

“There’s no better feeling than pulling into Milwaukee with other bikers and seeing all of the people on highway overpasses waving flags,” said Patrick Jarvis, a Milwaukee native who now lives near Albany, N.Y.

“It just sends goose bumps up and down your spine,” he added.

Jarvis will cover more than 3,000 miles in his trek to Milwaukee. He doesn’t like “straight lines,” so he’s taking a long route through Canada and around the Great Lakes.

‘Family reunion’

Dave Hirschi, a Milwaukee native living in Austin, Texas, also is coming to the anniversary party on his Harley.

“I am sure when I get on my bike and drive down Lake Drive, a swell of emotion will come over me. It will bring back a million memories of summer days and nights, riding my bike down the road. There was the cool breeze you felt as you got close to the lake, even when it was in the 80s just a few blocks away . . . driving past the spot where the ‘Outlaws’ hung out at night, then on past the place where the hippies played Frisbee. I am looking forward to having my Texas wife experience the sights and sounds of Lake Drive,” Hirschi said.

Harley hasn’t yet said whether it will have a similar event in 2013. Yet most riders don’t need much of an excuse to party in Milwaukee once every five years, especially if there’s something new to bring them back here.

“It’s like a family reunion. You don’t have to wait 25 years to get the cousins together,” said Kevin Brandt, creative strategist at Core Creative Inc., a Milwaukee advertising and public relations firm.

“I would guess that before the 105th is over, people will be talking about what’s going to happen five years from now,” Brandt said.

For riders, the trek to Milwaukee is almost as important as the destination.

“I get on the bike to escape from work and life’s pressures,” Jarvis said. “It’s not just about the party. It’s about the people you meet. You find old friends at these gatherings, and you make new friends too.”

Harley Davidson History

In 1901, the 21 year-old William S. Harley had created the blueprint of an engine that was designed to fit in a conventional bicycle. Two years later, William together with his friend Arthur Davidson started and developed a one-cylinder engine that was installed on a conventional bicycle during that time. However, this motorized-bicycle was proved to be incapable of climbing through the Milwaukee hills without pedal assistance. Harley and Davidson developed further their motor after that experience.

Immediately, they have created a bigger engine (405 cc or 24.74 cubic inches) that was become the very first and real Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Meanwhile, the first Harley-Davidson factory was in a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed. The two friends were helped by Arthur’s older brother Walter.

After a year, the Harley-Davidson motorcycle entered its very first motorcycle race at Milwaukee.

The first years came in so quickly for the company that after 3 years, Harley-Davidson motorcycle production was transferred at Chestnut Street (that was later become Juneau Avenue). This is still the Harley-Davidson headquarters up to this time.

In 1907, William received a degree in mechanical engineering at University of Wisconsin. This helped them to development of better Harley-Davidson engines in the future. The same year also provided them a much needed factory expansion for the growing motorcycle demands. The year 1907 introduced the 45-degree V-Twin engine which has become the sole Harley-Davidson engine for a very long time.

Over the years, the company has gained so much popularity that was converted into sales output. During the First World War, Harley-Davidson was commissioned to provide more than 20,000 units for military use. The story of the Second World was the same for the company. They produced thousand upon thousands of motorcycle.

Before the entry of the 70’s, AMF or the American Machinery and Foundry bought Harley-Davidson. Policies had changed that resulted to labor strike and substandard bikes. The popularity and reputation of the company was severely damaged.

In the 80’s, it was sold to a group of investors headed by Willie G. Davidson and Vaughn Beals. The provided innovations such as the introduction of the “Sturgis”. The costumers began to return and the company had seen clearer promise.

Since then, the popularity of Harley-Davidson motorcycles was unquestionable. They regained their leadership in motorcycle industry as they create a unique line of motorcycles, different from the conventional Japan made. Now, after more than a hundred years of existence, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have become an attraction in every road around the world.

How to Cure a hot running 2007 Harley Davidson?

That question must have been asked 10k times or more since the 2007 model line of Harley Davidsons were introduced. The mystery of the hot running 2007 models grew to almost a cult like issue on the Harley boards and Harley forums around the internet. Owners who didn’t realize they had a hot running Harley Davidson suddenly agonized over the “problem” and demanded answers.

Being the owner of a 2007 FXSTB Nightrain I was obviously interested in the answer to the question. My bike didn’t seem to run all that hot….I wondered aloud if some of these guys realized their motorcycles were air cooled and that they WILL run hot. I also questioned how many were first time riders and simply didn’t realize that a hot engine 6 inches from your legs is going to produce heat. I am sure a number of new owners or riders succumbed to the phenomenon of the hot running 2007. They jumped on the bandwagon as so many people often do, but then I am positive of others that actually did experience a hot running Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Friends of mine that I am positive know what they are talking about were experiencing the hot running 2007 issue so it wasn’t that the issue was non existent, I just think it might have been blown out of proportion. I decided to get to the bottom of the issue and see what I could find out about the problem. After a few days of digging around and talking to people in the know, I think it was clear what was the culprit.

Lean and Mean

After a lot of discussion and research it turns out that the new 96 cu inch Harley Davidson engine had to be tuned extremely lean in order to get it to meet government emissions requirements. The stock factory tune was set very lean by design, and as you know, a lean engine will run much hotter than a well tuned or even rich engine. Different riders reacted differently to the hot running condition as some didn’t even notice and others it was enough of a problem that they wanted to trade their motorcycles in for a different year.

I also noticed a trend that it seemed to be the bagger crowd complaining the most vocally and the most frequently. I don’t know if it is because the bagger crowd tends to be older and more demanding or if the models were more susceptible to the hot running condition. I think probably a little bit of both actually. If you take a look at the front end of some of the bagger models, the fairings restrict air flow across the engine dramatically compared to the more open models. So regardless of this issue, the lean condition seemed to be the culprit.

The Fix

The fix is rather simple.

Most riders that I was in contact with reported that a Stage 1 upgrade resolved the issue. A decent set of pipes combined with either a Stage 1 download or a fuel control system like a Power Commander or something similar cured the lean condition. They not only reported a much better running motorcycle but a much cooler running motorcycle. The addition of the pipes likely made for a much better looking and sounding motorcycle as well.

The Stage 1 kit will bring your motorcycle back down to a more normal heat range, at least normal for an air cooled Harley Davidson. The reflash will make for a richer mixture which will lower the operating temperature and make your Harley Davidson a much more enjoyable machine to ride.

If you want to check out a pretty cool selection of Harley Pipes or read more about Harley Exhaust then feel free to check us out. We not only write about Harley Davidson’s, but we ride them too.

Motorcycle riders tout their individualism and freedom.

By Jenny King

Special to the Chicago Tribune

July 20, 2008

Motorcycle riders tout their individualism. And freedom.

Karen Davidson, great-granddaughter of Harley-Davidson co-founder William A. Davidson, says the same of clothing for bikers.

“It’s about their lifestyle, about escape, about having fun,” says Davidson, creative director of general merchandise at Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson.

Davidson, who oversees design for the company’s19-year-old MotorClothes operation, paid her professional dues in the garment industry in New York, where she worked for a fabric, apparel and accessory company and as a leather-goods entrepreneur. She joined Harley in 1989.

That was a long way from the velvet tank tops, H-D drop earrings and $600-plus FXRG all-weather leather jackets with armor inserts.

And that’s a long way from the dawn of cycling togs in the 1920s, when boots, goggles, leather jackets and even skirt protectors were available, Davidson says. The Harley leather jackets bowed in 1947. The T-shirts date from the 1950s, Davidson says.

“Black leather jackets, jeans and T-shirts became our uniforms,” says Davidson, a fortysomething Californian who started riding at age 9.

And the uniform is changing. Traditional leather has been joined by water-resistant leathers, cottons and synthetic materials. Davidson point to the company’s FXRG line with woven shirts and denims introduced in 1997.

“I felt when I joined the company there was room for improvement in comfort,” Davidson says. “And people wanted more options. They were saying things like, ‘I would love a shirt I could wear to the office.’ ”

That thinking doesn’t hurt the bottom line, either. Motorclothes sales have mushroomed since 1989, the company reports. Davidson says they topped $200 million in 2007. Fourteen hundred dealerships worldwide carry the brand, with men buying about 60 percent and women 40 percent.

Cassandra Fenstermacher is one of the 40 percent, wearing full protective gear when riding with her husband, Rick, on his Victory and kicking around in Harley T-shirts and tank tops.

“I also have some suede-trimmed black leather Harley-Davidson boots with four-inch heels,” she says. “I don’t wear them often, and certainly not when we’re riding.”

Fenstermacher, of Port Orchard, Wash., says she goes with a leather jacket, Harley pants (leather in front and Kevlar in for comfort and breathe-ability), leather boots, gloves and a helmet on the road.

“If you are going to take a spill, you want material to be the first thing that touches the pavement–not your skin,” she says.

Comfort is the primary concern, says Colleen MacShara, of Milford, Mich., who rides in a club of with 40 women. Very disciplined riders wear full helmets and leathers. Some ride with tank tops, most wear jeans.

MacShara takes to her Honda Shadow Ace 750, wearing “things already in my closet,” and generally not Harley garments.

“They do look better now than in earlier years – they are more feminine, colorful and varied, though I’m not sure they are worth the price,” she says.

But Northwood University marketing professor Jeff Bennett points to the Harley cachet.

“It’s a valuable brand image,” Bennett says. “And Harley does a fabulous job with its bikes. I assume the same is true for the quality of its clothing.”

Bennett says a full riding outfit from Harley or another make is likely to run over $1,000. Still the former Toyota understands that price isn’t the issue: he has a decidely less expensive Harley leash for his 6-pound dog.

Davidson says the MotorClothes division is adding brighter colors and new styles. Pink jackets introduced a couple years ago are big sellers, she said. Jackets with removable hoodies let riders layer.

And there’s a patented helmet for women with an antistatic liner and room for a ponytail.

“I look at what people are wearing everyday to get ideas,” she says. “Cream is big. We’ve added touches of cream with the Harley colors orange and black.”

Coming soon are embellishments including grommets and appliqués, she says.

“This has become quite the playground for a designer,” says Davidson.
